Since 1996, the Revive Time: Kaki Tree Project has continued its art activities in Japan and around the world, planting saplings of second-generation atomic-bombed kaki trees together with children. The original atomic-bombed kaki tree, revived by tree doctor Masayuki Ebinuma, continues to thrive in Nagasaki today, its branches still full of healthy leaves.
Meanwhile, many of those involved in the project, including the owner of the atomic-bombed kaki tree, are aging, and several people connected with the project have passed away. As a result, it has become increasingly difficult to continue the work required to collect seeds, raise them into saplings, and send the grown saplings to planting sites around the world.
The Project Executive Committee has therefore decided to close all applications for new tree plantings as of September 2026.
We sincerely apologize to everyone in different regions who has been looking forward to planting a tree and preparing for it.
If possible, we kindly ask that you submit your application by September 30, 2026. For locations outside Japan*, the deadline is April 30, 2026.
* Plantings in EU member states will continue to be coordinated by KAKI TREE EUROPE, as before. For all other countries and regions outside Japan, the application deadline is April 30, 2026.
- As only a limited number of saplings remain, we may not be able to provide a sapling to every applicant.
- There are several requirements for those wishing to apply for a tree planting. Please review the “Application for Planting” page on our website.
- Activities other than new tree plantings will continue, including support for anniversary events in communities where trees have already been planted.
For the past 30 years, members of the Executive Committee have worked to “place a sapling in the hands of children around the world, one by one, and think together with them about peace and the future.” We hope you will understand that this has been a difficult and significant decision for all of us.
