From June 12th to Nov 7th, 1999
Exhibition by 『Revive Time』 Kaki Tree Project Executive Committee.
The Venice Biennale is a major contemporary art exhibition that takes place every two years, with a history of more than one hundred years. With persimmon saplings on display at the center of the event space, the committee introduced themselves and explained about their past activities. They displayed works from the project and workshops, and invited new participants. Visitors were free to write messages on cards that were then put up on the walls of the event space. By the end of the event, the walls were almost completely covered with messages of peace. The committee members also sought new ideas for workshops, and held several workshops in collaboration with local artists. 500 students from elementary schools around Venice participated in the workshops. The works they created were also displayed in the event space. The Persimmon Tree Café expanded outside the Japan section of the event space into a nearby park, prompting many Venetian locals and other passers-by to participate in the workshops. This exhibition was mainly planned by art student Ms. Hiroko Kato, and was presented through the concerted efforts of the action committee.
There was a great reaction from visitors, who said things like, “Previously, local people weren’t able to participate like this. It’s wonderful.” and “This place is full with the light of hope.”From around the world, the Persimmon Tree Project has received nearly 200 requests for tree-planting. Thanks to this exhibition, the Project has been recognized throughout the world.
