News from Shiraume Kindergarten, Higashi-gyonin Kindergarten
(Aizu-wakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan)
The saplings from the bombed kaki tree were planted at Shiraume Kindergarten and Higashi-gyonin Kindergarten on 7 March 2013. Children made the “Kaki Babies” drawings during the workshop held on 22 February 2013. The Aizu craftsmen have just finished making fine, pretty boxes to keep these drawings. They will be carefully kept inside the boxes for 10 years. When they get together again in 10 years from the planting, they will open them. We hope that children as well as the kaki trees grow up healthy in the coming 10 years. We would like to express our gratitude to the Aizu craftsmen for their excellent work and generosity, and to… Read more »

Kaki trees on Gran Canaria Island, Spain
Mr. Masao Kitazawa and Ms. Chiyoko Sano gave us another report on the kaki trees following the one in February. The trees were planted on 13 March 1999 at the Finca de Osorio. They told that the trees must have produced plenty of fruit as they saw a lot of stalks left on the trees. Mr. Kitazawa has been living on the island for more than 20 years. When he met the trees by chance in November 2011, Mr. Manolo, who has been working at the community house for 25 years, told him about the trees. Mr. Kitazawa kindly offered us “Is there anything I can do?” and visit the… Read more »

News from Sonico
Scuola dell’infanzia e Scuola primaria di Sonico
We have received an email from Mr. Giacomo Fanetti, Sonico, Italy. “According to the kindergarten principal, the kaki tree was bestowed unexpected honor when the Bike Trial Championship was held in Sonico this summer. He told me as follows: The Japanese delegates were visiting the town accompanied by the guide dispatched by Pro-Loco. As they passed the kindergarten, they realized that the descendant of the bomb-survived kaki tree of Nagasaki was planted in the garden. The news surprised them immensely, and they kneeled down on the road to honor this young seedling, a symbol of peace, and gave a silent prayer. What a glorious moment!”

From planting place / Kaki Tree Already Bears Fruit in the Second Year!
Teacher Fukuda has brought good news that one of the two kaki trees planted in Ushiku Daisan Junior High School on 12 March 2009 bore fruit for the first time. The second-year tree has grown so much that we were surprised. It is unusual for a kaki tree in the second year after the planting to bear fruit. It was very fortunate that the students have been carefully nurturing the trees and had chosen a good place with well-drained soil and plenty of sun. Keep up the good work everyone!
From planting place / Takahagi Primary School
Although Takahagi Primary School didn’t officially participate in the Kaki Tree Project, it is Mr. Masayuki Ebinuma’s alma mater and as we feel a special connection to the school, we are very happy to share this news. They planted “the seedlings of the bombed kaki tree” in March 1996 and named the two trees “Kakky and Nokky,” and have taken great care of them for 15 years. However, the trees didn’t produce fruit all the while. Then, they produced fruit for the first time in the autumn of 2010 and Principal Jiro Nagayama shared the happy news with Mr. Ebinuma. The following is an excerpt from the letter written by… Read more »

From planting place / Scuola Secondaria di 1 Grado “L. da Vinci”
The tree planting ceremony was held at Fondazione Don Angelo Colombo in March 2010. Scuola Secondaria di 1 Grado “L. da Vinci” participated in the ceremony and the school sent us three books entitled “Tree of Life.” There are poems, stories, thoughts and drawings by students which were showcased at the ceremony in March contained in the books. Those works are very touching as they express students’ wishes that we will never repeat the tragedy of Nagasaki.
