Exhibition “『Revive Time Kaki Tree Project in Mito – Prologue 2000” Art Tower Mito

Art Tower Mito is located in the center of Mito city, Ibaraki Prefecture and is known as one of the contemporary art center. In February, 2000, Mr. Tsukasa Mori, curator at Contemporary Art Gallery Mito , organized an exhibition to introduce “Revive Time – Kaki Tree project”, which Kaki Tree Executive office had been working since 1996.

The exhibition have been mainly conducted by members from the executive committee, and it focused the development of Kaki project, which grew up through a lot of communication/involvement/meeting with people. Portraits of the people involved, or presentation of each site were featured in the exhibition. During the exhibition, we organized several workshops and created “Learn and make ‘Kaki Tree Kit”.
There were 4 lectures by Tatsuo Miyajima, Dr. Masayuki Ebinuma, Dr.Nobuo Koike, collaborator to the project and tree doctor, Mr. Kakuya Matsumoto, teacher at Esashi-city, Iwate ( now renamed Oshu-shi, Iwate) where Kaki tree was planted in 1997, Ms. Akiko Shiihara from Yanaka School where Kaki tree was planted in 1998 as guest teachers. We also organized a workshop by Mr. Atsushi Shimizu called “Kaki Tree Kids ‘Do grafitti on the big wall!’”. The drawings by children had been exhibited on walls of the exhibition space during the exhibition.

This exhibition brought another project in South Korea. Mr. Ha Jung-Woong was so impressed by this exhibition that he applied for the project and realized it.

At Art Tower Mito, we created and exhibited “Kaki Tree Kit” as a new trial. WKaki Tree Kit” contains a historical calendar of the Kaki project, poster, photographs, flip-flop animation, a set of cards. These materials stimulate creativity and serve as a promotion tool which invites children to participate in the Kaki project.
