Planting Ceremony / New Park Bettole

Don Milani Cooperative Association was established in Coccaglio around 1973-1974 for housing development and in recent years actively undertakes construction of parks in residential area and plants seeds in green space besides its main housing development projects. Mr. Sileo Mario, Director of Don Milani Cooperative Association, applied for the planting. The tree planting was held on 8 May. Planting Ceremony / Giosue Carducci Junior High School

An international humanitarian association, “World Without Wars,” initiated a project called “The World March for Peace and Nonviolence” in the autumn of 2008. Millions of people participated in the World March, which began on 2 October 2009 in New Zealand and ended on 2 January 2010 in Argentina. Ms. Tiziana Volta, coordinator of the World March in Brescia initiated the tree planting at a new school in Castenedolo and Giosue Carducci Junior High School in L’Aquila. Although Takahagi Primary School didn’t officially participate in the Kaki Tree Project, it is Mr. Masayuki Ebinuma’s alma mater and as we feel a special connection to the school, we are very happy to share this news. They planted “the seedlings of the bombed kaki tree” in March 1996 and named the two trees “Kakky and Nokky,” and have taken great care of them for 15 years. Event / Yanaka Community Center

The kaki tree which was planted on 28 March 1998 at Yanaka Community Center in Taito-ku, Tokyo was moved to Hatsune no Mori, Disaster Prevention Space, which is across the street from Yanaka Community Center, in 2008. For 2 years after the transplantation, the tree did not produce any fruit, however, it produced a lot of fruit in the autumn of 2010 and the harvest festival was held on 13 November 2010. From planting place / Kaki Fruit at the St Giulia Museum

The kaki tree which was planted on 21 March 2000 at the Museum of Santa Giulia in Brescia, Italy, has borne fruit according to the report from Mr. Manisera. Although the tree’s trunk is not very thick yet, it bears about 20 pieces of fruit. The 10th anniversary event was held at the Museum on 25 March 2010.

10th Anniversary / Tohoku Seikatsu Bunka University High School

On 27 February 2001, the kaki tree was planted at Mishima Gakuen Girls High School. The school has changed its name to Tohoku Seikatsu Bunka University High School in the last decade and has changed a lot – it is now a coed school and the number of students has also greatly increased. The tree planting ceremony was held on 30 October 2010, which was also the 110th anniversary of the former Mishima Gakuen. 10th Anniversary / Tsukioka Primary School

Two kaki trees were planted on 5 February 2000 at Tsukioka Primary School and the 10th anniversary event was held on 27 October 2010, the school’s foundation day. The then-school principal and artist Mr. Michio Horikawa and tree doctor Mr. Masayuki Ebinuma from Nagasaki attended the ceremony. First, all pupils gathered in the school gymnasium and listened to Principal Mitsuo Yoshida’s talk on the history of the school and the planting of the kaki tree 10 years earlier. O-kaki Project Executive Committee General Meeting

After the plantings in the park of Ogaki Castle, Kono Primary School and Higashi Junior High School in 2000, citizen volunteers had set up the O-kaki Project Executive Committee and promoted various events such as the plantings in 41 locations within the city and chorus festival for the past 10 years. Workshop / Karako Primary School

The tree planting ceremony was held at Karako Primary School in 2007. Every year a workshop conducted by Anken Kidani is held for pupils to learn about the kaki trees planted in the school ground. A workshop for 3 combined classes was held in cooperation with the municipal office of Higashimatsuyama-City. Pupils learned about the kaki tree, atomic bomb and peace by watching the picture-card show “Kaki Tree Parent and Child” by Mr. Kidani and then they look at the trees in the school ground. From planting place / Scuola Secondaria di 1 Grado “L. da Vinci”

The tree planting ceremony was held at Fondazione Don Angelo Colombo in March 2010. Scuola Secondaria di 1 Grado “L. da Vinci” participated in the ceremony and the school sent us three books entitled “Tree of Life.” There are poems, stories, thoughts and drawings by students which were showcased at the ceremony in March contained in the books. Those works are very touching as they express students’ wishes that we will never repeat the tragedy of Nagasaki.

10th Anniversary / Pretura’s Garden

On 25 March 2000, a kaki tree was planted in the courtyard of magistrate’s court in Carpi, Italy. Then after ten years, on 8 May 2010, the 10th anniversary event of the planting was held and more than 200 children participated. As the anniversary’s theme was “From roots to leaves,” children were regarded as “leaves” and their grandparents were “roots”, and they examined the connections between them. In class, children expressed the relationship with their grandparents freely on the drawing. The last tree planting ceremony in the Province of Brescia was held at Centro Nautico Scout near Lake Iseo. A series of tree planting ceremonies were held in 8 locations in the Province of Brescia, Italy and this is one of them. Bienno is a small medieval town, it is a two-hour drive from the city of Brescia passed Lake Iseo. Italy’s first UNESCO World Heritage site, Parco nazionale delle incisioni rupestri di Naquane, is situated near the town and the town itself is renowned for its iron goods and fresh water. Town’s population has been slowly increasing in recent years due to immigrants. A series of tree planting ceremonies were held in 8 locations in the Province of Brescia, Italy and this is one of them. The tree was planted at “E. Fermi” Salo municipal high school, which is surrounded by beautiful nature and looks down Lake Garda.
